Healing Happens In Community

If there’s one thing recovery has taught me, it’s that I can’t do this alone. Believe me, I tried. For a long time, I thought I just needed more willpower, more discipline, or more “fix it myself” attitude. However, the truth is that isolation only made things worse. Healing didn’t really begin until I let other people in.

I used to carry so much guilt and shame, like no one could understand what I was going

through. But the first time I heard someone else share a story that sounded like mine, I felt

something shift within me. It was like this voice inside said, “You’re not broken. You’re not alone. There is a way out.”

Connection is sometimes as simple as grabbing coffee with a friend who gets it, showing up to a meeting even when I don’t feel like it, or being honest with someone instead of hiding behind “I’m fine.”

I used to believe recovery was about my journey in the beginning. Broken and desperate, I

grabbed onto this thing with everything I could. Quickly, I was taught that it’s about connecting with others and showing up for others to help me get out of myself. The people I’ve connected with remind me that I don’t have to carry the weight by myself and that we all have problems. They’ve taught me that healing happens together in being seen, heard, and accepted. In finding commonality and grace, understanding that we are all doing the best that we can at that moment.

Recovery is still hard work, but connection makes it lighter. It makes it possible and offers hope. And honestly, it makes it a lot more beautiful.

Because at the end of the day, I’ve learned this simple truth: we heal together.

If you do anything today, reach out to someone you haven’t talked to in a while, someone who has impacted you along your journey that you’ve lost touch with. Check in and open up with them about you, and listen to them as well. Nobody can do this alone, and I hope you don’t think you have to anymore.
