September is a significant time of year as it marks Recovery Month—a time to celebrate the triumphs of those who have overcome addiction and to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and substance use disorder recovery. Recovery Month, established in 1989, aims to highlight the gains made by those in recovery, advocate for increased awareness, and promote the idea that recovery is not only possible but also attainable with the right support and resources.
At its core, recovery is about reclaiming one’s life. It is not merely about stopping substance use; it encompasses holistic healing that involves emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Many face the mistaken belief that recovery is a linear path, when, in fact, it is often a complex journey filled with ups and downs. Individuals may encounter obstacles, including triggers, stress, or the risk of relapse, but it’s essential to approach these challenges with compassion and understanding.
Recovery is not a journey that can be navigated alone. Community support plays a vital role in helping individuals sustain their recovery. Connecting to those with similar experiences helps to alleviate shame and loneliness, enabling a sense of true belonging and hope.
During Recovery Month, many communities organize events to raise awareness, celebrate recovery, and foster a sense of belonging. Here in Las Vegas this month, we have:
Mobilize Recovery’s Campus Surge on September 26th at UNLV
Narcan At Night on September 27th at Substance LV
The Recovery Games on September 28th at Bob Baskins Park
Participating in local events not only helps connect individuals in recovery but also educates the broader community about the challenges of addiction and the success stories that can emerge from it.
Whether you’re in recovery, know someone who is, or are simply looking to learn more, there’s a place for you this month and every month to support and celebrate the journey of recovery.
